Each year, a jury of more than 80 Canadian auto journalists analyzes and tests a wide variety of new models to determine the Utility Vehicle of the Year. For 2021, they were especially impressed by the GV70 and its high-quality design, quiet cabin, and cutting-edge safety and infotainment technologies.
“We are pleased that the first-ever Genesis SUV, GV80, has received this prestigious award,” said Richard Trevisan, the brand director of Genesis Motors Canada. “With its bold design and the latest technologies, GV80 exemplifies the ambition of Genesis.”
The GV80 combines beautiful looks both inside and out with impressive performance from its 300-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo or 375-horsepower twin-turbo V6. With technologies like the Ergo Motion Driver’s Seat, Road Active Noise Cancellation, and Smart Cruise Control that can learn your driving habits, the GV80 provides an exceptional driving experience.

Genesis is getting electrified. The premium auto brand recently announced the first-ever Genesis EV — an electric version of its G80 sedan.
The Electrified G80 looks quite a bit like the gas-powered version, but it provides a unique twist with all-electric power, long-range driving capabilities, and a green-friendly interior.
“The Electrified G80, the perfect balance of athleticism and elegance, marks the beginning of our journey into the EV market, representing Genesis in the era of electrification,” said Jay Chang, global head of the Genesis brand.
The Electrified G80 will be able to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in a lightning-fast 22 minutes. Range estimates aren’t finalized but could end up topping 400 km.
The Electrified G80 will adapt Genesis exterior design elements with EV features, including a charging port hidden in the signature crest grille. The interior will use natural, sustainable materials for the seating, console, and trim.
A new Vehicle to Load, or V2L, feature will allow Electrified G80 owners to plug in electronics and power them with 3.6 kilowatts. The Electrified G80 will also come with key technologies like Road Active Noise Cancellation and the ride-smoothing Electronically Controlled Suspension with Road Preview.
Here at Genesis Downtown in Toronto, we think our G80 sedan is a great value — and J.D. Power agrees. This premium midsize car recently received the 2021 Canada ALG Residual Value Award for its segment, which means it is the vehicle in its segment that is most likely to retain its value over time.
J.D. Power Awards
The awards look at mainstream and premium vehicles over a span of time: four years for mainstream and three years for premium. J.D. Power then analyzes the vehicles to see which holds the highest percentage of its manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP).
“We pride ourselves on the outstanding quality of our vehicles,” said Richard Trevisan, Brand Director of Genesis Motors Canada. “This award reinforces our commitment to providing the best possible products and ownership experience to our customers. We are thrilled that G80 has been recognized as the leader in this category.”
This isn’t the first time that J.D. Power has recognized Genesis as a leader in the industry. In 2020, Genesis ranked number one among premium automotive brands in the J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) for the fourth year in a row.
Additional Genesis Accolades
The brand has also earned awards from other organizations. The brand received four 2021 autoTRADER.ca awards, and three Genesis vehicles were nominated as category finalists in the AJAC Canadian Car of the Year awards.

As the first Genesis SUV, the 2021 GV80 has been designed to make a big impression. That’s especially true of its technologies. From smart safety systems to innovations that will help you stay more comfortable on the go, here are three of the coolest new GV80 tech features.
Remote Smart Parking
The GV80’s Remote Smart Parking makes Toronto parking easy. In fact, you don’t even have to be in the vehicle to do so. This system controls the steering wheel, vehicle speed, and gear shift automatically — it can even be controlled with your key from outside the vehicle.
Ergo Motion Seat
Designed with seven air cells inside, the Ergo Motion Seat provides the right side support you need depending on your driving mode and vehicle speed. This helps minimize fatigue and keep you comfortable on the go.
Highway Driving Assist II
This automated system makes highway driving easier, controlling your speed and keeping you in your lane. It monitors the distance between you and the car in front of you, keeping a safe speed and distance. The system will even bring you to a full stop and restart when the car in front of you moves.
The winners of the 2021 autoTRADER.ca Awards were recently announced, and Genesis led the way. Vehicles from this premium carmaker earned a top spot in three award categories, helping Genesis tie for the most awards received from autoTRADER.ca this year.
These awards were decided by a panel of over 20 automotive experts across Canada. They looked at every car on sale in the Canadian market right now, evaluating them on 12 criteria: value, innovation, performance, engineering excellence, user-friendliness, driving satisfaction, design, quality of materials, fuel efficiency, safety, overall excellence, and technology and on-board features.
The first Genesis model to earn recognition was the Genesis G70. This sedan earned the Best Overall Car award, making it the best option in the entire industry. The G70 also won its segment’s category, earning the title of Best Compact Luxury Car. autoTRADER.ca celebrated its powertrain options, smooth handling, and luxury features.
Genesis also received awards for the Genesis G90 and Genesis GV80 in the Best Large Luxury Car and the Best 3-Row Luxury SUV categories. Panel members were impressed by the G90’s luxurious interior, which features premium comforts like Nappa leather seating, a 22-way driver’s seat, and innovative technologies. For the GV80, the panel noted its attractive design, high-tech features, and conveniences like a massaging front chair.
When you want a good-looking vehicle, you should look no further than Genesis. For the sixth year in a row, the GOOD DESIGN® Awards have recognized the premium carmaker for its high design standards.
This year, Genesis earned the top spot in the Transportation category for the G80 sedan, the GV80 SUV, and the Genesis Infotainment System’s Copper Design theme.
Genesis is known for its unique design identity, which includes features like the signature Crest Grille and two-lined Quad Lamps. The award-winning G80 is considered the centrepiece of the brand’s lineup, and took the lead in design with its coupe-like roofline and an interior that epitomizes the “Beauty of White Space” concept, balancing advanced technologies and personal space.
The GV80 is the first SUV model for Genesis. It was designed as a collaboration between studios in South Korean, the United States, and Germany. Like the G80, this premium SUV presents key Genesis design points like the Crest Grille, Quad Lamps, and a sophisticated, spacious interior.
The Copper Design theme for the Genesis infotainment system increase visibility and usability while utilizing an elegant copper theme that enhances the brand’s premium feel.
Previously, Genesis has earned recognition for the G90 in 2015; the Vision G Concept in 2016; the G80 Sport and GV80 Concept in 2017; the G70 and Essentia Concept in 2018; and the G90 and Mint Concept in 2019.

The Genesis lineup is about to welcome its second premium SUV model: the all-new GV70. Recently unveiled in South Korea, the compact GV70 fits in well with other Genesis models while flaunting its own sporty identity.
The exterior of the GV70 is designed according to the Genesis Athletic Elegance philosophy. Highlights include a low-set crest-shaped grille, signature quad lamps, and under-bumper skid plates up front. The sides of the vehicle incorporate the trademark Genesis parabolic line, which merges with chiseled rear fenders and highlights the vehicle’s coupe-style silhouette. Rear quad lamps, a patterned bumper, and a vertically oriented muffler design complete the GV70’s look.
On the inside, the Genesis GV70 introduces an approach known as “the beauty of white space.” This design language emphasizes an airy, convenient, and comfortable layout that caters to the driver’s needs. A wide display screen sits atop a layered dash. Below the steering wheel, an elongated, oval-shaped section presents physical climate and infotainment controls. A wide console holds a rotary infotainment controller and electronic shifter.
The Genesis GV70 will also be available in an exclusive Sport trim. The exterior features 21-inch G-Matrix patterned wheels, dark chrome accents, an enlarged exhaust outlet, and a special front bumper. Inside, the GV70 Sport is styled with a sport steering wheel, unique colors, and carbon-fiber elements.
